OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville rowing team opened the spring racing season with seven varsity race wins over Buffalo and Duke on Sunday during their spring break trip to Oak Ridge, Tenn., site of the NCAA South/Central Regionals later this year.
"The team did a really nice job this morning in trusting their fitness and executing the race plan," said Louisville head coach Laura Fogt. "Buffalo came off the line really strong in all the races and we did a great job of maintaining our rhythm and keeping it controlled. This allowed us to chip back into them at about the 700-meter mark and open it up once we were through 1000 meters. I'm really proud of the way they handled themselves throughout the entirety of the course."
Louisville's No. 20 ranked varsity eight crew earned an impressive win over Buffalo and Duke covering the 2,000-meter course in a time of 6:43.92. Buffalo was second with a time of 6:51.16, while Duke was third at 6:56.53.
In the second varsity eight race, the Cards finished with a time of 6:53.11 and was followed by Duke at 6:55.62 and Buffalo at 7:02.18. The Cards' varsity four crew also picked up a race win with a time of 7:52.59, while Buffalo's `A' crew was second at 7:57.73. Buffalo's `B' boat was third at 7:59.44, followed by Duke at 8:08.86 and the Cards' `B' boat in fifth at 8:14.63.
Louisville's two varsity eight crews also raced two 1,000-meter pieces each against Buffalo on Sunday. The Cards' varsity eight boat won the first piece with a time of 3:19.50, while Buffalo finished with a time of 3:20.95. Louisville also won the second piece in the varsity eight race with a time of 3:17.87 and Buffalo was in at 3:19.93.
The Cards' second varsity eight crew defeated Buffalo by more than three seconds with a time of 3:32.26 in the first piece, and earned another win in the second piece with a time of 3:26.87 to Buffalo's 3:28.64.
"We've spent the last few months learning how to pull hard on the erg and how to grit through the pain and today was about taking those lessons and transferring it to boat speed," said Fogt. "This was a great race to start the training week off with. We saw some good splits and positive speeds from which we will build on over the next few weeks."
Buffalo did pick up a pair of novice wins on Sunday with a time of 7:28.18 in the novice eight race, while the Cards were second with a time of 8:29.97. In the novice four race, Buffalo led the way at 8:09.31, followed by Duke at 8;24.80, Buffalo's `B' crew at 8:32.62 and Louisville in fourth at 8:33.57.
The Cards will spend the rest of the week in Oak Ridge, Tenn., training and will contest exhibition races during the week against Tulsa and possibly Dartmouth.
