The University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles point and then battled a determined Rice University squad in singles with two tiebreakers to win 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"This was a really good performance," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "It is gratifying to see the true self-confidence of this team coming back. We needed to pull off a win over a nationally ranked team to get our self-belief back."
This is the second win in a row for the Cardinals after a 10 day break in the schedule.
U of L took all three doubles matches with the No. 1 duo of Natalia Baez and Bianca Gorbea rolled 8-1 over Ana Guzman and Julie Chao to set the tone. Lauren Imre and Amelia Harris staved off the hard charging No. 3 pair of Alex Rausch and Rebekha Hanle 8-6. U of L's Lindsey Jones and Jo-Ann Van Aerde made it a sweep, but it was no easy task as Becca Lin and Jess Jackson dug their heels in before falling 9-8 (7-4).
U of L got wins at No. 2 singles when Gorbea bumped Guzman 6-1, 6-4. Imre won over Jess Jackson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Freshman Sarah Miller won 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 6 to clinch the win.
