The University of Louisville took the doubles point and then rolled to wins in five of six singles matchups to beat visiting Xavier 6-1 in collegiate tennis action Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"It is always good to get a win at home. We had a long break in our schedule and it is good to be back," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "We were a little rusty but we seemed to have gotten that out of our systems today. Getting a win today should put us in a good frame of mind as we play nationally-ranked Rice tomorrow (Saturday). We practiced well and I feel like we are ready to make a good run through the rest of the season."
The Cardinals jumped on the Musketeers quickly by sweeping all three doubles matches. Bianca Gorbea and Natalia Baez paired to beat Kelsey Kinnard and Tifanie Treece 8-4 at No. 1. Lindsey Jones and Jo-Ann Van Aerde held on to beat Kara Courtney and Kaitlyn Zinn 8-5 at No. 2. Lauren Imre and Amelia Harris had their hands full with Christie Pleiman and Jill Ducre before winning 8-6 at No. 3.
Xavier got its only point at No. 1 singles when Courtney tipped Jones 6-2, 6-2. It took three sets before U of L's Bianca Gorbea took down Tifanie Treece 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. The Cardinals then met little resistance the rest of the way for the win.
The Cardinals (6-6) return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday when Rice visits the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
