LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 win over visiting Maryland Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Terrapins open their spring season with a loss.
"Playing two Atlantic Coast Conference teams in one weekend can make you look like a lunatic, or a genius - especially if both of these teams (Friday's opponent NC State and Maryland) handed us our heads the last time we played them," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "This is our third successful weekend of play and this team is really ypicke up some legitimate momentum. Austen and Simon have never beaten Orban and Fetbroyt, including a loss to them in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Orban and Fetbroyt entered the preseason ranked No. 6 in the nation. Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Callagari bounced back very well, and from that point on, our singles play took over. I'm especially proud of Andrew Carter."
U of L swept the doubles matches to take the first point. Sophomores Austen Childs and Simon Childs topped 35th ranked Andy Orban and Boris Fetbroyt 8-6 at the top seed. The win avenged a season ending loss in 2008 in which the Maryland duo ousted Childs and Childs from the NCAA Doubles Championship. Louisville's 44th-ranked team of senior Robert Rotaru and sophomore Alejandro Calligari topped David Kown and Nickolai Nielsen 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Viktor Maksimcuk and freshman Robert Hall combined to beat Mathias Sarrizin 8-5 at No. 3.
For the third time in four matches this season, the Cards swept singles in straight sets. Maksimcuk quickly gave Louisville a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Orban at the No. 2 seed. 65th ranked Simon Childs added another point with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Sarrazin at No. 3. No. 47 Austen Childs clinched the win by beating Kwon 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. Rotaru picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nielsen at the four-spot. Hall edged Potarazu 7-5 in the first set and won 6-2 in the second at No. 5. Freshman Andrew Carter also outlasted his Aksanov 7-6 in the first set and went on posted a 6-3 victory in the second to wrap up the match at No. 6.
