LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville junior goalkeeper Katie Zoeller, making her first career start, made eight saves to notch her first career shutout and help the Cardinals to a 2-0 win over DePaul Sunday at Cardinal Park.
"We certainly aren't happy with the way we played today but at the end of the day it is a win," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said.
"DePaul did a very good job and definitely outworked us so now we need to reevaluate some things and refocus as we move further in to the BIG EAST season."
UofL (4-4-1, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) put on some early pressure in the first six minutes, as Giselle Mangal had her shot blocked, Kelsey Hunyadi sent one wide left and Lindsay Boling had a shot blocked by the Demon (2-9-0, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) defense.
After Zoeller made her first save of the match on a shot by Shannon Williams in the 19th minute, and a second off the foot of Morgan Celaya in the 22nd minute, the Cardinals then had to defend three consecutive corners, and held DePaul without so much as a shot on any of the three set pieces.
In the 26th minute, Shannon Smyth was taken down while working in on an endline run inside the box, giving the Cardinals a penalty kick.
Hunyadi stepped up to the dot and drilled it under the crossbar for her first goal of the season, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Auld created a nice scoring chance in the 37th minute, but sent her shot wide left.
Zoeller made two more saves, to carry the 1-0 lead into intermission.
Shots were 8-6 in favor of the Blue Devils and shots on goal were 5-1 in favor of DePaul at the break.
Smyth chased down a pass along the right side and sent it into the six where Shannon Leamy had her shot attempt deflected off of DePaul keeper Brittni Lally and the crossbar, before Boling charged into the box and tucked the ball into the net for the 2-0 advantage at 74:17.
It was Boling's team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The teams exchanged scoring chances down the stretch with Lally making stops on Chelsea Spencer and Kate Cunningham.
DePaul pressed forward to break the shutout, but the Cardinal defense was solid, getting a spectacular team save by Cunningham, who headed what appeared to be a sure goal over the crossbar.
On the ensuing corner, Zoeller made the last of her eight saves, diving to her right and stoning Alyssa Wray at point blank range to secure the shutout in the 89th minute.
Louisville held a 9-8 edge in shots in the second half and 5-4 in shots on goal.
The Cards will host their first home weekend of the season when UConn visits Cardinal Park Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Providence Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before embarking on a four-game road swing.
