COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State scored the deciding goal in the 99th minute, clinching a 2-1 overtime win over the University of Louisville women's soccer team Sunday in the final non-conference match of the season.
"We did not come out as sharp as we would have liked in the first half, but we made some adjustments and put them under a lot of pressure in the second half," said UofL Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes.
"Ohio state is a good team and we certainly will take some things away today that will help us grow and become a better team as we get into the heart of the BIG EAST season."
The Cardinals (3-3-1) were the first to put pressure on when Kelsey Hunyadi's shot from the top of the box was saved by OSU keeper Lauren Robertson at 7:56 mark.
In the 17th minute, Cardinal keeper Chloe Kiefer turned away Genna Brand to keep the game scoreless.
Ohio State (2-4-2) outshot the Cardinals 7-3 in the first half, with most of the Buckeyes' shots coming from distance. Each team managed just the one shot on goal in the scoreless half.
Chelsea Spencer had a scoring opportunity in the 58th minute, but Robertson made the save.
The Cardinals finally broke through at the 63:11 mark when Shannon Smyth netted her second goal of the season, finding the left corner of the goal from just inside the 18 for a 1-0 Cardinal advantage.
Hunyadi put two more shots on net in the 67th minute, but again, Robertson came up with the saves, keeping the Buckeyes within striking distance.
In the 82nd minute, Taylor Moront scored her third goal of the season on an assist by Lisa Collison to put Ohio State on the board and tie the game at one.
As they did in the second half, the Cardinals controlled play in overtime.
Freshman Ashley Auld looked to send the Cardinals home winners four minutes into the extra period, but her shot from the right side was stopped, as was Kate Cunningham's bid for a game winner in the 96th minute.
Collison scored the winner at 98:49 on an assist from Ashley Bowyer, her third goal of the season.
"We got a great goal from Shannon Smyth and had another couple of chances that we could have capitalized on, but their keeper did very well to deny us the second goal," Ferguson-Dayes added.
"Unfortunately we gave up a late goal in regulation time, a bit against the run of play, and again in overtime they managed to find their way through to score the game winner."
The Cardinals were outshot 16-15 by the Buckeyes for the match, but doubled up OSU with eight shots on goal to Ohio State's four in a physical match that featured 27 fouls.
The Cardinals will travel to South Bend, Indiana Friday to face the nation's top-ranked team, Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. before hosting DePaul at Cardinal Park Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
