OXFORD, Ohio - Mother Nature played a prominent role, as the 26th-ranked University of Louisville women's soccer team battled back from a 1-0 deficit to capture a 3-1 win over Miami(OH) Sunday afternoon.
Remnants of Hurricane Ike pushed up the Mississippi and impacted the Ohio Valley with high winds that delayed the game momentarily when trees in an adjacent field were uprooted.
Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes was pleased to overcome the Redhawks and the elements.
"Considering the conditions we played in, we were very happy to come away with a win."
The first half was played relatively even, with Miami striking first.
Louisville responded when Kelsey Hunyadi ran the flank and drove a ball toward the goal that was deflected in by Mallory Lampson to even the game at one. It was Lampson's second goal of the season.
"In the first half it was not easy playing into the wind, but in the second half the wind was with us and we were able to take advantage of it by scoring a pair of goals," Ferguson added.
In the second half, Caitlin Rehder found Giselle Mangal as she entered the right side of the top of the 18, and Mangal placed a laser into the net for what would turn out to be the game winner. Mangal, a talented freshman notched her first career goal.
Rehder set up an insurance goal when she beat a defender on an endline run and fed Lindsay Boling who finished Near post to close the scoring. It was Boling's team-leading third of the season.
Louisville will now open BIG EAST play Friday against rival Cincinnati at Cardinal Park beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET
