LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The 13th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team will face its fifth consecutive top 20 opponent when the Cards travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face No. 8 Virginia Sunday at 1 p.m.
Louisville (3-1) is coming off of a 5-1 win over No. 15 Ohio State on Wednesday at Trager Stadium. The win over the Buckeyes closed a four-game homestand. After beating No. 12 Duke in the season-opener, the Cards' only loss has come at the hands of No. 10 Michigan State. U of L also defeated No. 20 Ohio University 4-1 during that stretch.
Junior Kayla May leads the Cardinal offense with five goals for 10 points and sophomore Nicole Youman follows with seven points (2G, 3A).
The Cavaliers enter the game with a 4-1 record, after suffering their first loss of the season to No. 9 James Madison on Wednesday. UVA is led offensively by Michelle Vittese who has 10 points (4G, 2A). Paige Selenski follows with nine points (4G, 1A). Virginia goalkeepers Amy Desjadon and Devon Burnley have held opponents to a stingy 0.74 goals against average, allowing only four goals in five games.
Virginia owns a 2-1 edge in the series which dates back to the 1977 season. In the most recent meeting, the Cards edged the Cavaliers 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 7, 2007 at Trager Stadium.
Louisville's early season schedule doesn't get any easier after this weekend. Following the Virginia game, the Cards will open BIG EAST Conference play on Friday, Sept. 19 when they travel to No. 7 Syracuse.
