Why I Row... The walk-on experience
August 07, 2008 | Rowing
"I played soccer, basketball, and softball in high school. I decided to tryout for rowing because I wanted to continue physical activity in college and rowing seemed like a good way to do that. However, it has turned into much more than I expected. I love the competition, the races, road trips, and especially all of my teammates."
~ Jennifer Allen - 2006-2007 Captain (Elizabethtown, KY)
"I discovered the novice rowing team the first week of school at UofL. Rowing has provided me the opportunity to live a dream and to compete against the best as well as improving both my physical and mental strength."
~ Becky Whorle - Senior, 2006 (Sellersburg, IN)
"I couldn't imagine not being involved in a sport since I have been active my whole life. Being part of a top 20 program in a Division 1 sport is an amazing opportunity that I wound have never imagined could happen to me. Plus, the wonderful friendships you develop, the traveling, and all of the exciting racing you do is an awesome experience."
~ Beth Daunhauer - 2006-2007 Captain, All American (Louisville, KY)
"I started rowing as a walk-on just looking to be involved in campus. I tried the sport and absolutely loved it. Not only did I love the sport but I loved my teammates. I finished my senior year as a team captain for a Top-20 Division 1 program, it doesn't get much better than this."
~ Jenna Sample - 2006 Varsity Oarswoman of the Year, Captain (Louisville, KY)
"When I came to U of L I was used to always doing a sport year round so I knew I wanted to get involved with something. I decided to tryout for the rowing team and found not only the involvement that I wanted but also some of the greatest people I have ever met. Joining the rowing team has helped me in every facet of my life, given me opportunities to go and compete in amazing places, and introduced me to people who have become my best friends."
~ Katie Fitzpatrick - Senior (Edgewood, KY)
"The reason I joined the rowing program is because I was looking for a way to get and stay fit. I was in a new environment and I felt I needed to find a way to develop a healthier lifestyle while in college. I also wanted to become a Division I athlete and make friends and rowing was my way of doing so. I just so happen to enjoy everything that encompasses this program. From my coaches and teammates, to the travel opportunities, the competition, the support of my friends and family, and the Cardinal Pride, I could not have asked for more. Rowing for U of L has made my transition from high school to college much better that I could have imagined. It was the best, life changing decision I have ever made. I wear that "L" everyday with Pride."
~ Shalori Moore- Junior (Louisville, KY)
