Rowers Generally Are...
August 07, 2008 | Rowing
- Tall - Over 5'9" is great, but a lack of height can be overcome by a fierce competitive sprit, fitness, and drive.
- Former athletes - Athletes coming from endurance sports like swimming and cross country are particularly well suited to the demands rowing places on the body and the mind. However, successful walk-ons also come from backgrounds in basketball, volleyball, track, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, gymnastics and dance- pretty much anything that demands dedication and focus!
- Super fit - Fall races are around 3 miles long and last close to 20 minutes. Spring races, the NCAA season consists of 2,000 meter (just over a mile) sprint races that last around six and a half minutes. Good fitness is the foundation for fast rowing, so cardio and strength training are key to success. If you are not in peak shape right now, don't worry. As long as you show potential, we have plenty of was to get you fit. However, good fitness early on is a big advantage in making the team.
- Strong - Contrary to what most people think, the legs, not the arms, are the most important muscles in rowing. The stronger your legs, the more you can generate to propel a boat. Strong arms and backs are a bonus.
- Smart - There aren't too many `dumb jocks' around the boathouse! For whatever reason, rowing traditionally attracts the kind of athlete who excels in the classroom.
