Louisville, Ky. - University of Louisville senior men's golfer added another remarkable highlight to his career when he qualified for the U.S. Open by finishing in a tie for third place at the 2008 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Event at the OSU Golf Club - Scarlet Course on Sunday, June 2.
The U.S. Open will begin on Thursday, June 12-15 at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif. Fathauer will go out next week to play in a pair of practice rounds before first round play begins on June 12.
Fathauer, who recently guided the University of Louisville to a tenth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, shot 67-68=135 to tie for third-place with Ben Crane of Westlake, Texas and qualify for one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious golf tournaments.
"This is an unbelievable accomplishment for Derek," said head coach Mark Crabtree. "I'm very proud of him. He just came off playing on one of the toughest golf courses at the NCAA Championships last weekend so he will be prepared.
