WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Louisville capped off another memorable men's golf season by posting its highest finish at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships by placing in 10th place at Purdue University's 7,450-yard Kampen Course.
As a team, the Cardinals shot 311-296-300-306=1213, despite rough conditions and a difficult golf course.
The Cardinals went through a grueling four days of play, battling through treacherous weather on Friday and tough conditions on Saturday. The Cardinals were still on the course on Friday when play was suspended at 5:53 p.m. Louisville had to tee off at 8:00 a.m. and finish three holes to even qualify as one of the top 15 teams in the final round.
"The golf course was so difficult today," said Mark Crabtree. "The weather conditions and the wind made it really difficult out there. Karsten led the way again, like he did in the regional. Hopefully, that will kick him off for next season. Overall, I thought it was a great tournament for this group. It was a record-setting performance for us, not-ever advancing this far so I'm really pleased for the senior class. Derek Fathauer, Daryl Fathauer and Adam Rainaud accomplished quite a bit and laid the groundwork for years to come."
UCLA won the national title with a putt on the final hole to finish at 1194. Stanford came in second (1195), followed by USC (1196 ). Oklahoma State (1200) was fourth, Clemson (1201) placed fifth and Kent State (1204) was sixth. Washington (1208) came in seventh, while Georgia (1210) and Charlotte (1210) tied for eighth.
For the second straight tournament, freshman Karsten Clements paced the Cardinals in the final round and helped the Cardinals gain ground. Clements shot 2-over par 74 after entering the day at 23-over par. Clements finished at 25-over par with his 80-79-80-74=313. He finished in 64th-place.
Senior Adam Rainaud had an outstanding tournament, shooting 10-over par for the four days. He was an impressive 4-over par on Saturday and carded 77-71-74-76=298 for the tournament to finish in a tie for 13th-place overall.
Derek Fathauer capped an outstanding career by shooting 11-over par at the championships. He carded 77-72-72-78=299 to finish in a tie for 16th place. Fathauer ends his career with six tournament wins and is the school's all-time stroke average leader.
Junior Adam Hadwin was 22-over par for the tournament after shooting 78-76-74-82=310. Senior Daryl Fathauer was 34-over par with his 79-77-88-78=322. He placed in a tie for 55th.
The senior class led the Cardinals to four straight regional and two NCAA appearances and put the Cardinals in the national rankings for the first time. However, Crabtree is already looking toward next year.
"We have some players coming back with some experience," said Crabtree. "I'm very pleased with the recruiting class we have coming in. It's a highly-ranked class, but it will be a challenge for us. We will try to set the bar really high for those guys and as a coach, we start again tomorrow."
