Men's Golf Moves to 16th Place After Two Rounds

West Lafayette, Ind. - The University of Louisville men's golf team received solid performances from seniors Adam Rainaud and Derek Fathauer on Thursday to move up to 16th-place on Thursday at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships at the Kampen Course Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
Clemson holds a one stroke lead over UCLA after the completion of play in the morning wave of teams. Clemson is first at 589, one shot ahead of UCLA and two shots ahead of Southern California. The Cardinals have a two-round total of 607, which is 18 shots out of the lead.
Clemson played the back nine, its first nine holes of the day in 11 over par and found itself tied for 15th place at 24 over par for the tournament. But, the Tigers played the front nine, their second of the day, in 11 under par to finish at even par 288 for the round and 13 over par for the tournament. Clemson and Stanford had the top rounds of the morning wave of teams.
The Cardinals, who shot 23-over par as a team on Wednesday, improved by 15 shots, but were unable to crack the top 15. The 30 team field will be cut to 15 teams after the third round on Friday. The final 18 holes will be played on Saturday.
"I thought the play was better," said head coach Mark Crabtree. "Adam Rainaud shooting 71 and Derek Fathauer firing 72 -- that is good stuff. We just need a little better performances from the other guys. The top 15 teams play in the morning and teams 16 through 30 play in the afternoon. It's a big deal to play in the morning, but right now that is out of our control."
Rainaud, who shot 77 on Wednesday, roared back to be the only Cardinal under par on the day. Rainaud carded a 1-under par 71 and is 4-over par for the tournament. He stands in a tie for 17th.
"I think Adam drove the golf ball better today," said Crabtree. "He was a little bit sharper with what he was trying to do. The same with Derek. Obviously, the conditions were better today, but both guys played much better."
Derek, who was also at 77 on Wednesday, had a chance to shoot under par, but bogeyed 18 to finish at even par 72. Both Derek Rainaud were 1-under par after the first nine holes as the Cardinals were seven 7-over par as a team on Thursday. He is tied for 24th place.
Junior Adam Hadwin improved by two shots to shot 76 and is tied for 70th. He gained a little momentum by scoring birdies on 15 and 16, but turned around and bogeyed 17.
Senior Daryl Fathauer also improved by two shots from round one, but was 5-over par on the afternoon and is tied for 96th-place.
Despite giving away five shots on the first three holes, freshman Karsten Clements played pretty well, shooting a six-over par 78. Clements triple bogeyed the first hole and bogeyed two and three, but responded by notching birdies on six, nine and 13.
The Cardinals will tee off in the afternoon session, which will begin at Noon.
