After dropping the doubles point and the top two singles slots, the University of Louisville looked to the heart of their lineup for support and they delivered. Winning No. 3 through No. 6, the No. 40-ranked Cardinals edged visiting South Alabama 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. U of L moves to 11-5 for the season.
"This was a great bounce back after what happened against Houston," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham, whose team fell 4-3 to Houston on Friday in the opposite circumstance. "Today, we showed the true character of this team, we probably should not have won this match but we found a way to win. I am extremely proud of the team for the way they competed today."
In doubles, Lindsey Jones and Jo-Ann Van Aerde won 8-4 at No. 2 for the Cardinals but it wasn't enough as Natalia Baez and Bianca Gorbea fell 8-4 at No. 1 to Sylvanie Spangenberg and Adrianna Solorova. U of L's Robyn White and her partner Lauren Imre battled to a hard-fought 8-6 loss to Erica Krison and Jelena Krivacevic.
Lindsey Jones and Lauren Imre fell at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. The Cardinals were boosted by Natalia Baez's easy 6-2, 6-1 win over Katie Welch. Robyn White rolled 6-0, 6-4 to bring the Cardinals back to 3-2. Jo-Ann Van Aerde won 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 in a three set marathon at No. 6. Bianca Gorbea dropped her first set 6-7 before scrambling back to win 6-3 and 6-4 for the match.
