Louisville, Ky. - Angel McCoughtry led all scorers with 26 points, even after a second half stint in the locker-room to treat an injury. Her gritty performance was one of many for the Cardinals (20-7, 9-5 BIG EAST) that allowed them to overcome a determined Providence team 82-57 in Freedom Hall.
Candyce Bingham and Chauntise Wright also scored in double-figures for the Cardinals with 18 points each. Bingham was impressive in every aspect of the game with six rebounds, three assists, and one block. McCoughtry added seven rebounds and three steals to her totals.
The Friars (12-14, 2-12 BIG EAST) came out of the gate playing with great poise and patience. Their ball movement resulted in open layups that gave them an eight point lead in the early going. Louisville's comeback began when Bingham began to slash to the basket and Wright got to work in the paint.
McCoughtry found Bingham drifting under the basket for a layup with seven minutes to play in the first half that gave the Cardinals a 29-27 lead. Providence would not lead again in the game, but they gave their best effort to never let Louisville put the game away.
At the break Louisville led 44-34 after a Friar three at the buzzer. The Cardinals shot 58 percent (15-of-26) from the field, and 20 percent (1-of-5) from behind the arc. Providence connected on 44 percent (14-of-32) from the field, and 22 percent (2-of-9) from three. Louisville held a slight 17-14 advantage on the boards at the break.
The second half saw many runs go back-and-forth between the two teams. Louisville built a 25 point lead, but also allowed Providence within six early in the half. The game wasn't safely put away until the final five minutes when Brandie Radde connected on two 3-pointers and Laura Terry scored two quick baskets off the bench.
Providence was led by Brittany Dorsey with 13 points and three assists. Shantee Darrian finished with a double-double, 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 55 percent (29-of-53) while holding Providence to 39 percent (22-of-56). The Cardinals outrebounded the Friars 38-28.
Louisville will travel to Morgantown this Saturday for their final road game of the regular season against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on BIG EAST TV.
