LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville lacrosse program will make its official debut on Friday at 1 p.m. ET, as the Cards host Division II foe Bryant University at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium located on South Floyd St., next to the Yum! Center. Admission is free for the event.
The game will be preceded by a special ceremony at approximately 12:50 p.m., and the first 500 fans to enter the gates at the stadium will receive free, authentic mini-sticks.
"It really has been a long time coming for this day and we're eager to get on the field," said Cards' head coach Kellie Young, who was hired on July 20, 2006 to lead the Louisville program into its first varsity season. "The athletes we have are thrilled with what we're doing and we know we're going to struggle at times as a first-year program in the BIG EAST, but the support from the administration, the university and the community has been wonderful. We hope to have a lot of great Cardinal fans out on Friday afternoon to support our team."
On April 21, 2005, University of Louisville vice president for athletics Tom Jurich announced the plans to add women's lacrosse as the Cards' 23rd varsity sport for the 2008 season and after almost three years of hard work by the coaches and administrators, the program will finally take the field for the first time on Friday.
For the opener, the Cards will welcome Bryant University, located in Smithfield, R.I., for the Bulldogs season-opener. Last season, Bryant finished 9-6 overall and in fourth place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings with a 7-3 conference mark. This year's Bryant team was picked to finish fifth in the NE-10.
Following Friday's game, the Cards will return to action on Sunday as they host Manhattan College at 1 p.m. ET at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
