La Quinta, Calif. - Two-time All-American golfer Derek Fathauer closed out Q-School yesterday with his sixth consecutive sub-par round (2 under-par, 70) on the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West to earn his 2009 PGA Tour card. Fathauer finished tied for second place with a total of 24 under-par (70-69-65-67-67-70-408). Fathauer becomes the third Cardinal to earn his privileges on the Tour joining Jim Ferriell, Jr. and Ted Schulz.
The six round tournament was contested over two of PGA West's championship courses, the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and the TPC Stadium Course, home to one of golf's most diabolical holes, the par 3 island green 17th, appropriately nicknamed "Alcatraz."
Fathauer tied Australian James Nitties, eight shots behind medalist Harrison Frazer who posted a fourth round 13-under par 59 to help distance himself from the field.
Fathauer has competed in two previous PGA Tour events; the 2007 Ginn Sur Mer Classic and the 2008 United States Open, both as amateurs. Following his U.S. Open play, Fathauer competed for his country in the Palmer Cup, an event between the top U.S. collegians and their counterparts from Europe, where he posted a 3-1 record. Fathauer capped off the summer and his amateur career with a second trip to the Quarterfinals of the United States Amateur Championship at Pinehurst.
Fathauer looks to tee it up in his first event of the year at the SONY Open in Hawaii January 12 - 18 at Waialae Country Club with a purse of $5,400,000.
