Wake Forest Slips Past Syracuse 3-2 in Overtime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Hilary Moore's hat-trick goal in overtime gave second-seeded Wake Forest a 3-2 win over No. 3 seeded Syracuse in the NCAA semifinal game on Friday night. Wake Forest improves to 22-3 while Syracuse closes their season with a 22-2 record.
The start of the game was delayed for 40 minutes due to frosty field conditions.
Wake Forest grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the first half on Moore's first goal that deflected off a defender's stick into the left side of the goal cage at the 10:36 mark.
Syracuse answered when Lindsey Conrad rifled a shot from the top of the circle to tie the game at 1-1 at the 19:43 mark.
The teams entered the break tied at 1-1 with Syracuse holding a 6-5 edge in shots and a 6-2 penalty corner advantage.
Wake Forest opened the second half by penetrating into the Syracuse circle and getting a clean shot on goal, but Heather Hess came up with her third save of the game for the Orange.
The Demon Deacons took a 2-1 lead when Moore scored her second goal seven minutes into the second half on an assist from Kim Romansky.
Conrad matched Moore's two goal performance late in the second half to bring Syracuse back to a 2-2 tie at the 57:10 mark.
With the game tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, the game entered a seven on seven, 15 minute sudden victory period.
Each team had scoring opportunities in the overtime period, but Moore delivered the game-winner with just under six minutes to go in overtime.
In the game Syracuse held a 16-10 lead in shots and an 8-3 corner advantage. Hess had five saves for the Orange, while Crystal Duffield collected five stops for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest (22-3) with face top-seeded Maryland (21-2) on Sunday at 1:00 PM for the 2008 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship.
