
Men's Golf Finishes Fourth at UNCG

FOREST OAKS, NC - - The University of Louisville men's golf team finished in fourth place just nine shots behind Duke University, who rallied for a four-shot win over Michigan State at the 2008 UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club.
The Blue Devils overcame a five-shot deficit and overtook Michigan on the final day for the win. Duke finished at 869, followed by Michigan State at 873. The Wolverines finished third at 874. Louisville, the defending champion and winner of two of the three previous team titles, finished in fourth. Tournament host UNCG was fifth at 888.
Payne Gniewek of Michigan State and Max Scorodo of Notre Dame tied for the individual lead. Both players finished at 213 for the 54-hole tournament, three-under par. Due to travel considerations, a playoff was not held and the duo were declared co-champions.
For the Cardinals, freshman Riley Wheeldon played the round of his career, firing 74-71-72=217 to place in a tie for seventh overall. It was the best finish in his brief career for the Cardinals.
Senior Adam Hadwin tied for ninth with 75-69-74=218, while freshman Connor Arendell was tied for 26th after carding 77-70-76=223. Sophomore Lewis Kirton tied for 30th with his 77-74-73=224 and sophomore Karsten Clements was tied for 49th overall with 73-76-80=229.
Seven teams - Louisville, Mississippi State, Duke, Michigan State, Memphis, Michigan and Purdue - were participants in the NCAA Tournament last spring. Currently, Michigan is ranked No. 25 in the Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll with Duke close behind as the first team in the others receiving votes category. Michigan State, Pepperdine, Louisville, Mississippi State are also currently receiving votes in the Nike Poll. According to the Golfstat rankings (based on final place in tournaments), Pepperdine (28), Michigan State (34), Minnesota (35), Duke (37), Michigan (41), Louisville (42) and Mississippi State (45) are all ranked in the Top 50 currently.
The top-ranked individuals playing in the tournament according to Golfstat included Pepperdine's Andrew Putman (77th) and Louisville's Adam Hadwin (93). Hadwin tied for ninth and Putnam tied for 19th.
