The Cardinals won the doubles point and got help from deep in their lineup to beat Michigan State 5-2 in East Lansing, Saturday.

"We just beat a very good Michigan State team," said U of L coach Mark Beckham. "We played pretty good but I think we are capable of playing even better. We found a way to win. When it is all said and done, this may turn out to be a very big win for us this season. It was a very tough match against a very good team and we found a way to win it."

U of L swept the doubles point to start the match out. The No. 1 pair of Lauren Imre and Lindsey Jones handled Lindsey Lonergan and Manon Noe easily, posting a score of 8.4. At No. 2 doubles, the duo of Bianca Gorbea and Natalia Baez held on to win 8-6, the same score as their No. 3 teammates Jo-Ann Van Aerde and Robyn White.

Imre and Jones fell at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. However, the Cardinals were given a huge lift with a gritty performance at No. 3 when Gorbea beat Lonergan 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5). Baez won 6-4, 6-3 over Whitney Wilson at No. 4. Van Aerde rolled 6-1, 6-2 over Ana Milosavlievic at No. 5. Robyn White, in her first singles match of the season, won her first set 6-0, dropped her second set 1-6 and then battled her way to a 7-5 win in the third set.

The No. 75 Cardinals now stand at 1-1 on the season, with Michigan moving to 2-2.
