Louisville, Ky - The University of Louisville put the pads on for the first time this summer with a two-hour work out on Monday at the football complex.
In 97-degree heat, the Cardinals went through drills in full pads and were able to hit and tackle for the first time.
"It was a good, spirited practice," said head coach Steve Kragthorpe. "I thought the players competed hard and I put some carrots out there for something to compete for."
Those carrots were two gassers, which the defense had to run for losing to the offense in a scrimmage situation. The first team offense and defense and the second teams competed 12 plays in third and long situations. After 12 plays, the offense and defense were tied at 6-6. Kragthorpe had one play for all the marbles to break the tie,and senior quarterback Brian Brohm hit Trent Guy on a third and seven play.
During the scrimmage situation, Brock Bolen scored on a run for over 60 yards as did Sergio Spencer.
The Cardinals return to practice on Tuesday in full pads in tempertures that are expected to reach over 100 degrees.
Coach Kragthorpe is scheduled to appear live on College Football Live on ESPN.
