LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team got an early preseason test against a strong alumnae team and prevailed 2-1 Friday evening at Trager Stadium.
The 2007 Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on senior forward Missy Briery's unassisted goal in the first half. Senior forward Allison Maffitt made it a 2-0 game early in the second half.
The Alums mounted a late attack and responded with about five minutes left in the game when Jen Payne connected on a feed from Carrie Jackson.
The Cards, who started four freshmen, outshot the alumnae 10-6 and held a 6-5 penalty corner advantage.
"I would like to thank our alums for coming out to support and prepare us for our upcoming season," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Every year our alums get strong and the number increases for this game which is a great testament to this program. We look forward to this opportunity to have a game before our season begins and - at the same time - unite the past and the present. As a result, our current team gets a chance to play against former All-Americans, national team members and some of the best our school has seen."
U of L will continue its preseason training with an exhibition game at Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, August 17 at 3 p.m. The Cardinals will officially open the 2007 season on August 25 at Michigan State.
