LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former Cardinal rower and 2007 University of Louisville graduate Beth Daunhauer was one of 29 female spring sport student-athletes in all three NCAA divisions to be awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The NCAA's spring women's sports include golf, rowing, softball, tennis and outdoor track and field.
A graduate of Seneca High School in Louisville, Ky., Daunhauer was the only rower and one of only 12 Division I student-athletes to earn the spring award. To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. Earlier this month, Daunhauer was named CRCA Second Team All-America becoming just the second rowing All-American in school history, while in May, she earned CRCA National Scholar Athlete honors and was named First Team All-South Region.
In her final collegiate season, Daunhauer led the Cards' Varsity 8+ crew to wins over three Top 20 teams in 2007 and the program's highest national ranking ever at No. 16 on March 28. The Cards closed the season ranked at No. 17 in the final USRowing/CRCA Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. U of L also earned a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Conference Championships and a Varsity 8+ petite final victory at the Aramark South/Central Region Sprints.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated. In maintaining the highest standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program.
In addition to the spring sport honorees, the NCAA also awards 116 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in fall and winter sports in which the NCAA conducts championships or participates in as an emerging sport, for a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships annually.
