INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - University of Louisville sophomore Tone Belt suffered a knee injury on his third and final attempt in Friday night's long jump competition at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium.
After narrowly fouling on his first two attempts, Belt, the 2007 NCAA indoor long jump champion, hyperextended his left knee while landing on his third and final attempt. The extent of the injury will not be known until after Belt returns to Louisville on Saturday and is examined by the U of L medical staff.
"It's disappointing any time you have an athlete suffer an injury, especially in a big event like the USA Championships," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "We'll get Tone back to Louisville where he'll be examined by our wonderful medical staff at the University of Louisville."
Belt, a native of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., is a four-time NCAA All-American and a six-time BIG EAST champion in just two seasons as a Cardinal. In March, he became U of L's first individual NCAA champion winning the long jump title at the NCAA Indoor Championships Fayetteville, Ark.
On Sunday, U of L sophomore Andre Black will compete in the triple jump competition at 12:30 p.m. ET at the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships. Black, a native of Mobile, Ala., is the 2007 NCAA indoor triple jump and a five-time BIG EAST champion.
The AT&T USA Outdoor Championships is the most pivotal track & field meet in the country this year and will determine Team USA for the upcoming World Championships and Team USA for the Pan American Junior Games.
