LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville rowing head coach Richard Ruggieri announced Monday the signing of prep rowers Sarah Fiske and Shelby Shultz to national letters-of-intent and both will join the Cards for the 2007-08 season.
"We're excited about our recruiting class and where the University of Louisville rowing program is going," Ruggieri said.
Fiske and Shultz, along with spring signees Kristin Falovo, Samantha Kayser and Kira Lawson, complete the Cards' 2006-07 recruiting class.
Fiske is a native of Barrington, R.I., and a graduate of St. Andrews School. In 2005 and 2006, Fiske won back-to-back 2x race titles at the Head of the Fish, while she finished second in the High School Youth 2x at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. Most recently, her crew earned a Doubles win at the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Junior Regional Championships to earn a bid to the USRowing Youth National Championships. She's also competed at the Royal Canadian Henley and the CRASH-B's World Indoor Rowing Championships.
"Sarah is a tremendous athlete that has focused on sculling in high school," Ruggieri said. "She has performed at a high level within U.S. junior rowing during her career. We anticipate Sarah to have an immediate impact on our varsity team. She will be able to thrive in a team environment with others trying to reach the same goal."
Shultz, a native of Dublin, Ohio, and a graduate of Dublin Jerome High School, has been a member of the Dublin Crew for eight seasons. She's participated in many competitive events such as the Head of the Charles, the Royal Canadian Henley, the San Diego Classic, the Mid-West Championships and the US Rowing Youth Nationals. Her top performance in 2006 was qualifying for the US Rowing Youth Nationals in the Women Youth 4 event and an 11th-place finish, and she can row either port or starboard.
"Shelby is an experienced rower that will continue to develop as she starts her journey with U of L rowing," Ruggieri said. "We're excited to have Shelby joining our team next fall."
The Cardinals closed the 2007 season on May 13 with a fourth-place finish in the South Region at the Aramark South/Central Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Overall, U of L scored the most points in school history at the event with 285 points. The Cards, which completed the season ranked No. 17 in the final USRowing/CRCA Varsity Eight Coaches Poll, advanced to the grand final in the 2nd Varsity 8+ and Open 4+ events at the Region Sprints and had the program's best ever finishes in the Varsity 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+ and Open 4+ events.
