
Field Hockey Finishes Successful Weekend

The University of Louisville field hockey team completed a successful weekend of spring play, defeating Indiana 4-2 at Trager Stadium Friday and going 4-1 to win the Hoosier 7 v 7 Tournament.
In Friday's game, the Cards took a 3-1 lead in the first half. Senior Lisa Wasser and freshman Kayla May registered unassisted goals. Junior Allison Maffitt connected on a feed from junior Janelle Avila. Maffitt and Avila combined again in the second half. IU added another goal for the 4-2 final.
The Cardinals continued their success Sunday at the Hoosier 7 v 7 Tournament which featured a team of U of L Alumnae team consisting of Jessica Javelet, Lisa Wasser, Carrie Jackson, Jen Kastelic, April White, Rachel Overton, Jen Payne and Suzanne Irwin. Other teams in the field included: the IU Club team, the IU Alumnae team, Ball State and the host Hoosiers.
In the first game, the Louisville alumnae edged the Cards 1-0. U of L followed with a 3-0 win over the IU club team. Missy Briery scored two goals, both with assists from Maffitt and junior Casey Diener added an unassisted goal.
In game 3, Louisville defeated the IU alumnae team 2-1. Avila scored with an assist from Diener while Maffitt delivered on a feed from Avila. In a battle of the Cardinals, U of L prevailed in a 2-1 decision when Diener scored on May's assist and Briery connected on Maffitt's assist for the winning goal.
Avila scored the only goal of the game as Louisville defeated Indiana 1-0 to finish in first place. The Cards defeated the U of L Alumnae team 4-1 to claim the championship. Avila scored three goals, two with assists from junior Casey Meizinger and Diener; and Diener tallied the final goal. The U of L Alumnae's lone goal came from Lisa Wasser with assists from Jen Kastelic and April White.
"It is an incredibly proud moment for Louisville Field Hockey to have the current team and our alumnae playing for the championship in a tournament of this caliber," said head coach Pam Bustin.
The Cardinals will conclude the spring season when they host U of L 7 v 7 Spring Tournament on April 14 and the U of L 11 v 11 Spring Tournament on April 15. The tournament field includes Appalachian State, Ball State, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri State, Robert Morris, Saint Louis and the U of L Alumnae.
