University of Louisville field hockey player Jessica Javelet has been named one of six finalist for the annual Walter Byers Scholarship. Two finalists, a male and a female, will be selected later this month as recipients of the 2007 Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarships.
The Walter Byers Scholarships were established in 1988 and recognize the contributions of former NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. The awards encourage academic achievement of student-athletes. Each Byers Scholar receives a $21,500 scholarship. Recipients of the award must have a 3.5 grade-point average (4.0 scale), demonstrate evidence of superior character and leadership and show that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on their personal and intellectual development.
Javelet, a midfielder from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., produced a stellar career at U of L, becoming the school's most prolific scorer and one of the most highly decorated players in Cardinal history. She holds the Louisville career records for goals (69), assists (38) and points (176) and the single season marks for goals (30), assists (14) and points (74).
Javelet was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year in 2006, when she helped lead the Cardinals to a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. As a junior, Javelet was the league's Co-Offensive Player of the Year. She received All-BIG EAST First Team accolades in both '05 and '06. Additionally, the NFHCA named Javelet an All-West Region First Team performer for three straight seasons from '04-06.
Javelet also made a name for herself on the national scene. In 2004, as just a sophomore, she received NFHCA All-America Third Team honors. In 2005, Javelet led the nation in goals scored (30) en route to becoming the first player in Louisville history to earn NFHCA first team All-America honors. She was also named to the U.S. Field Hockey Under 21 National Team and was a finalist for the 2005 Collegiate Women's Sports Honda Award for Field Hockey. As a senior, she became U of L's only three-time All-American, receiving NFHCA All-America second team honors. Javelet was also named to the U.S. Field Hockey National Developmental Team.
In addition to her achievements on the field, the marketing major has also earned several accolades for her classroom and extracurricular accomplishments. She was named the 2006-07 BIG EAST Aeropostale Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Javelet is a two-time ESPN The Magazine/SoSIDA Academic All American and a four-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad.
Outside the classroom and off the field, she worked as program director for the campus radio station from 2004-06, Javelet coached high school girls lacrosse and worked with teenagers suffering from Down's syndrome in a Saturday basketball league.
U of L finished the 2006 season with a 12-8 record and a No. 15 ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Cards also clinched a share of the BIG EAST regular season championship with a 5-1 record in league play.
