Junior forward Janelle Avila is traveling with the United States Under 21 Squad to China as they prepare for the 2007 Pan American Championship and the 2009 Junior World Cup. The team arrived in China on Saturday and has played two games so far.
Avila was in the starting lineup in the first game against the Shanghai Club team and gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead in the second half. The U.S. went on to win 3-2 in the first game of their tour.
"We just finished our first practice game against the Shanghai Club team," said Avila. "We won 3-2 with five seconds left. They are very good and play a fast-paced game. We have practice tonight and then we play China tomorrow at 3 p.m. I'm really looking forward to playing them."
Avila also got the starting nod against the China U21 team. The U.S. took an early 1-0 lead, but China scored six unanswered goals in the 6-1 win.
Avila and the U.S. U21 team will be back in action against the Shanghai Club March 14 at the MinHang Hockey Stadium in Shanghai, China.
