The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 43-ranked SMU Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"We played a good match," said U of L head coach Greg Davis. "I think SMU is a team I can see being Top 25 before the end of the year. Their ranking doesn't do them justice. We are doing better and better each match and we played hard. We gave it our all."
U of L, short-handed due to illness and injury, was unable to salvage the doubles point after giving up the No. 3 spot to default. Bianca Gorbea and Jo-Ann Van Aerde battled to a 9-8 tiebreaker before falling at No. 2. Robyn White and Natalie Laszkowski were edged 8-6.
Gorbea was the only Cardinal to take her singles match, with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Georgiana Marta. Laszkowski won her first set 6-4, dropped the second 6-2 before falling 6-4 in the third to No. 2 Jennifer Chay. White was edged 7-5 in the first set, before SMU's No. 1 player Natalia Bubien rolled 6-0 in the second. At No .5, Baez was nipped 7-5, 7-5 by Pavi Francis in the longest match of the day.
The Cardinals are idle until next Friday, when they travel to South Bend, Ind.
"We are looking forward to our big match against No. 2 ranked Notre Dame in a BIG EAST match," said Davis.
