No. 72 University of Louisville women's tennis team fell to the No. 46-ranked University of Denver 5-2 in women's tennis action today at Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Despite taking the doubles point the Cardinals had their hands full as DU won five of six singles matches to earn the win and improve to 5-2 overall. Louisville falls to 4-6 with the loss.
Louisville won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. doubles win by default at No. 3. Laszkowski and White teamed to beat Aksdal and Schnoy 8-5. Van Aerde and Gorbea outlasted Julia Bauregger and Kyla Iwinski 9-7 at No. 2.
"I think the positive coming from this weekend of very competitive tennis is the improvement of our doubles play. We won both doubles points this weekend," said U of L head coach Greg Davis. "I think we played well against a very talented Denver squad."
Bianca Gorbea continued her winning ways for the Cardinals, scoring U of L's only point in singles with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win over Rachel Sackmaster. Annette Aksdal defeated Natalie Laszkowski 6-4, 6-2 at No. Ute Schnoy defeated Robyn White 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2, while Julia Bauregger edged Jo-Ann Van Aerde 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 3. Iwinski cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Natalia Baez at No. 5, while Boothman won by default at No. 6.
"Our best tennis is ahead of us," said Davis. "We have a tough week ahead of us with Kentucky on Tuesday, Auburn on Friday and Ohio State on Sunday all at home."
