
No. 14 Field Hockey Defeats Dartmouth 5-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior All-American Jessica Javelet and junior Missy Briery registered two goals each and senior Jen Kastelic also scored as the 14th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Dartmouth 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium. U of L improves to 3-1, while Dartmouth falls to 0-2 on the season.
"I was pleased that we were able to create and capitalize on our scoring opportunities today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Dartmouth made us work for every opportunity we created and really tested us today. This was a good weekend for the growth of our team in the early part of the season."
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard at the 11:51 mark in the game. Briery fired a shot to Dartmouth goalkeeper Ashley Heist and connected on the rebound off of her pads to make it a 1-0 game.
Louisville struck again six minutes later. Junior Allison Maffitt's shot was rejected by Heist and Javelet was in position to knock in her first goal of the season, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead.
The Big Green answered at the 30:08 mark after drawing a penalty corner. Whitney Waugh sent a shot to Louisville goalkeeper junior Marie-Claire Heller and Lizzie Bildner took the rebound and deposited the ball in the back of the cage to cut the lead to 2-1.
Two minutes later, Louisville scored an insurance goal when sophomore Lauren Schaefer sent a pass from the front of the cage to senior Jen Kastelic who was waiting on the left side to deliver the goal. The Cards took the 3-1 lead into halftime after outshooting the Big Green 14-4 and holding a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners in the first half.
Louisville opened the second half with a quick goal just 2:28 into the period. Junior Janelle Avila set up Briery for her second goal of the game with a feed from the right side of the circle. Briery connected to make the score 4-1. Javelet capped the scoring for the Cards at the 44:41 mark when she collected a long rebound from her own shot and sent the ball past Heist for the 5-1 win.
U of L outshot Dartmouth 9-2, while both teams had three corners each in the second half. Heller (3-1) posted three saves in 61:30. Freshman Heather Bustanoby played the final 8:30 of the game. Dartmouth's Heist (0-2) registered 16 stops in the contest.
The Cards are back in action Sept. 10, when the travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on No. 2 Wake Forest at 1 p.m.
