
No. 12 Field Hockey Defeats Vermont 6-2

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - - Senior midfielder Lisa Wasser notched her first career hat trick and dished out two assists and the 12th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Vermont 6-2 in a neutral site game played at Syracuse. U of L improves to 6-3 (1-0 BIG EAST) while Vermont falls to 4-4 on the season.
"I really have to credit our offense for taking advantage of our scoring opportunities today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Also, our defense came up strong in holding a very dangerous Vermont team."
Wasser broke through with her first goal of the game at the 3:02 mark which she connected on a penalty corner feed from junior forward Janelle Avila. Wasser dished to senior midfielder Jessica Javelet to put the Cards ahead 2-0 at the 19:43 mark in the game.
Four minutes later, Wasser and Avila combined on another goal to make the score 3-0. Javelet delivered an unassisted goal to give Louisville a 4-0 lead at the break. The Cards outshot the Catamounts 19-7 going into halftime with Vermont goalkeeper Erin Hickey posting 10 first half saves. Danielle Collins put the Catamounts on the scoreboard at the 45:47 mark in the game. The Cards responded three minutes later when Wasser completed her first career hat trick with an unassisted goal to make it a 5-1 game.
Vermont's Maegan Luce connected on Kim Striegler's assist to make the score 5-2 at the 55:06 mark.
Louisville freshman forward Kayla May capped the scoring with an assist from Wasser with 35 seconds remaining in the game.
U of L outshot Vermont 26-12 and had a 16-4 penalty corner advantage in the game. Wasser and Javelet are now tied atop the Louisville offensive stats with seven goals each on the season. Cardinal goalkeeper junior Marie-Claire Heller (6-3) posted five saves in the cage. Hickey (3-4) registered 13 stops for Vermont in the loss.
The Cards will return home to face BIG EAST foe 10th-ranked Connecticut Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
