
No. 11 Field Hockey Rolls Over Ball State 9-0

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - - Seniors Jessica Javelet and Lisa Wasser each registered a pair of goals and assists as 11th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Ball State 9-0 Saturday at the University of Michigan. Louisville improves to 4-2 on the season, while Ball State falls to 1-6.
U of L got on the scoreboard at the 9:12 mark in the first half when Javelet sent a pass from the right side to the front of the cage where junior Casey Diener connected for the 1-0 lead.
Louisville scored three goals in a five-minute span to move to a 4-0 lead. The offensive flurry started at the 13:24 mark when Wasser powered a penalty corner shot past Michigan goalkeeper Caroline Lehman with assists from senior Jen Kastelic and junior Casey Meizinger to make it a 2-0 game.
The Cards struck again two minutes later when Javelet sent Wasser's initial penalty corner shot into the cage to give Louisville a 3-0 lead at the 15:38 mark. Three minutes later, senior Carrie Jackson delivered a shot from the top of the circle and Lehman came up with a save, but junior Allison Maffitt was there to send the rebound into the cage to make the score 4-0.
U of L tacked on one more goal in the first half when sophomore Lauren Schaefer connected on Maffitt's cross from the right corner of the circle. Louisville took a 5-0 lead into halftime, outshooting BSU 11-3 and holding a 3-1 edge in penalty corners.
Louisville came out firing early in the second half when Wasser and Javelet again combined to add to the Cards' lead. This time Wasser converted a feed from Javelet to make to a 6-0 game just 1:15 into the second half.
Three minutes later, Wasser sent a pass from the top of the circle to set up junior Missy Briery's goal to make the score 7-0 at the 39:36 mark.
Javelet struck again with an assist from Diener to give Louisville an 8-0 lead at the 45:19 mark.
Freshman Kayla May capped the scoring when she took a pass from Diener at the 45 yard line, dribbled into the circle and got into a one on one matchup with Lehman. May sent the ball into the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal and the final 9-0 score.
U of L outshot Ball State 18-8 and held a 4-2 penalty corner advantage in the game. Louisville starting goalkeeper junior Marie-Claire Heller picked up three saves in 66:31, while freshman Heather Bustanoby registered one stop in 3:29 as the Cards posted their first shutout of the season.
Lehman had four saves in the game for Ball State. Lindsay Quay led BSU with five shots, two of them on-goal.
Louisville will face host Michigan (3-5) Sunday at 1 p.m.
