EUGENE, Ore. - Former University of Louisville All-America performer Kelley Bowman earned a third-place finish in the high jump at Tuesday night's Road to Eugene '08 High Performance Track and Field Event at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Bowman, who completed her collegiate career with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships in June, cleared a height of 5 feet, 10.75 inches to finish third in the field of seven jumpers in the inaugural event, which showcased American Olympians and Olympic hopefuls as well as many members of the U.S. junior national team in their final prep before the World Junior Championships.
Also competing for the Cards were 2006-07 sophomores Tone Belt and Andre Black who finished eighth and ninth respectively in the men's long jump. Belt, an NCAA All-America performer in the event after a fifth-place finish at the national championships in June, cleared 24-06.25, while Black jumped 24-01.75. Louisville distance runner Cory Thorne, who will also be a sophomore in 2006-07, competed in the 1,500-meter run but did not finish the event.
Belt, Black and Thorne will next travel to Beijing, China, for the IAAF World Junior Championships on Aug. 15-20. Thorne will represent Team USA in Beijing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after earning junior national champion honors with a first-place finish in the event at the USA Junior Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., in late June. Belt will compete in the long jump and Black will compete in the triple jump in China after each athlete earned second-place finishes at the national junior meet.
