LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After trailing 1-0 early in the first half, the University of Louisville women's soccer team responded with two first half goals of their own, en route to a 2-1 win over Nebraska in the Third Annual Jenna Cooper Memorial Match.
"They are a hard team to play against because they play so direct, it is difficult to keep possession for any amount of time, but we found ways to beat them," said Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"We did very well to preserve the lead in the second half, as we got a great effort from our starters and our bench.:
The Huskers took the 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when sophomore Danielle Schoen took a feed from freshman Brittney Lainer and beat Cardinal keeper Deana Waintraub.
Louisville responded just over three minutes later when junior Monique Gjini sent a corner across the box where after a deflection, it ended up on the foot of freshman Lindsay Boling, who buried it in the back of the net to tie the game at one.
In the 25th minute, senior back Amy Seng sent freshman Lindsey Fox in on the right side, who sent a perfect feed across to Jamie Craft. Craft finished to give the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage that would stand.
Louisville held a 6-4 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes, forcing Husker keeper Jamie Klages to make two saves.
With a little under 12 minutes remaining in the match, Nebraska's Shea Powell hit the crossbar with a shot attempt, gathered the rebound and targeted the lower right side, but Waintraub made a nice stop to preserve the lead.
Minutes later Fox bid for a two-goal lead for the Cards, but Husker keeper Jamie Klages made a nice diving save of her own.
Nebraska held an 8-3 edge in shots in the second half, with the Cardinal defense making two team saves to go with Waintraub's stop in the second half. Craft and Fox each had three shots to pace the U of L offense.
Fox and Boling were joined by defender Sara Scharoun as three true freshman in the starting lineup for Louisville.
All proceeds from ticket sales today benefit the Jenna Cooper Memorial Fund. Cooper, who starred at Sacred Heart High School and played three seasons for the Huskers died after sustaining injuries in an April 2004 shooting.
The match was the final exhibition tune-up of the season, after the Cardinals picked up a 4-2 upset at #18 West Virginia earlier in the week.
Louisville will host Ohio on Friday, August 25 in Cardinal Park at 5:00 p.m. ET. to open the regular season.
