Louisville, Ky. - After holding its first set of two-a-day practices on Wednesday, the Cardinals hit the field this morning for a little individual work before getting a chance to scrimmage for the first time.
The Cardinals scrimmaged for about two hours in the hot sun and a lot of positives came out of the session.
Both quarterbacks, Brian Brohm and Hunter Cantwell threw the ball extremely well and were able to direct the offense well throughout the scrimmage. The offense played with great tempo and looked to be clicking pretty well. The offensive unit made a number of big plays as they usually do and the offensive line continues to work hard at becoming a strong and cohesive unit. Harry Douglas is going to be a special player in this offense. His speed and ability to catch the ball in traffic will be a huge lift after losing a guy like Joshua Tinch.
Defensively, the Cardinals flew around to the football and were able to be disruptive. William Gay made a couple nice tackles and also recorded an interception.
I thought both sides of the football showed great intensity and we're talking and getting after it. The hitting was hard and the competition was the best its been all camp.
Coach Petrino wanted them to play hard and get reaclimated to how the Cardinals play football on gameday. The Cardinals took most of the snaps from the opponents 35-yard line and would return to the same spot after each play. They did simulate actual drives later in the scrimmage.
After watching the first three units today, it was impressive to see guys taking coaching well and really talking to each other on the sidelines. It seems like the team is really starting to come together.
After the two hour scrimmage, the team took a break for lunch and will get together to watch the film. There were some mistakes, which you expect for the first real scrimmage, but there were a lot of good things to build off of. Tomorrow it's back to two-a-days!
