Louisville Rowing Set For BIG EAST Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the first time in the seven-year existence of the University of Louisville rowing program, the Cardinals will compete for a conference title at Sunday's BIG EAST Championships at Lake Quinsigamond in Worchester, Mass.
The 2006 BIG EAST Championships will open for the Cards at 8:40 a.m. ET with the second of two Varsity 8+ heats. U of L will also race in Heat # 2 of the Second Varsity 8+ event at 9 a.m., and in Heat #2 of the Varsity 4+ event at 9:20 a.m.
The first event final, the Novice 4+, will begin at 11:50 a.m. ET and will be followed by five other event finals. The day's schedule will conclude with the awards presentation at approximately 1:20 p.m. ET.
"We're extremely excited about competing in our first BIG EAST Championship event," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "We've had the most challenging schedule in school history this season and that was done to prepare us for the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Regional. Our goal on Sunday is to focus on the things we can control and to row our fastest races of the season."
The Cards, among those receiving votes in this week's USRowing/CRCA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll, enter this weekend's event after successfully defending their Varsity 8+ title and winning the overall women's team trophy at the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on April 15 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. U of L also won the Junior Varsity 8+ "A" Final and the Freshman/Novice Lightweight "A" Final at the SIRA Championships.
Following this weekend's BIG EAST Championships, the Cards will compete at the NCAA South/Central Regional Championships on May 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
