LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field program will host its first home meet of the 2006 season, the Cardinal Invitational, on Saturday at Cardinal Park Track Stadium on the U of L campus.
The collegiate meet, which will run in conjunction with Male High School's Bulldog Classic, will begin at 11 a.m. ET and admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students 18 and under. The field of teams for the 2006 Cardinal Invitational includes BIG EAST foe DePaul, Big Ten members Ohio State and Purdue and Missouri from the Big XII, along with Xavier, Butler and Indianapolis.
"One of our goals when we came to the University of Louisville was to bring a high level of track and field to the city of Louisville, and we feel like we've taken a step in the right direction with this meet," said Cards' head coach Ron Mann, who is in his second year at U of L. "We're referring to this year's event as the `Big' meet with schools from the BIG EAST, Big Ten and Big XII, and the competition should be very good.
"For everyone around the city of Louisville and throughout the region, it should be an exciting day of track and field. Whether you arrive at 11 a.m. or 6 p.m., and stay for 30 minutes or six hours, it should be a great meet for the fans."
Some of the featured events at the 2006 Cardinal Invitational include the women's high jump at noon ET, the women's 400-meter hurdles at 2 p.m., the men's triple jump at 4 p.m., and the men's high jump at 6 p.m.
The women's high jump will feature U of L record holder and three-time NCAA regional qualifier Kelley Bowman. A native of Mt. Vernon, Ky., Bowman earned the NCAA Mideast Regional standard at last week's Sea Ray Relays and matched her school record in the event with a jump of 5 feet, 8.75 inches.
The 400m hurdles will include Cardinal freshman Heather Trimiew, U of L record holder in the event and the top ranked athlete in the event in the BIG EAST after last week's time of 59.05 seconds at the Sea Ray Relays. Trimiew, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., is has qualified for the NCAA regional in the 400m hurdles and also the 2006 BIG EAST champion in the indoor 400m.
In the men's triple jump, the Cards will feature freshman Andre Black, the 2006 BIG EAST indoor triple jump champion and the school record holder in the event at 52-05.00. A native of Mobile, Ala., Black is ranked third nationally in the triple jump and is the top ranked triple jumper in the NCAA's Mideast Region and the BIG EAST Conference.
Leading the pack in the men's high jump is U of L freshman Tony Belt of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Belt, the school record holder in the event, is the top ranked high jumper in Mideast Region and the BIG EAST Conference and his personal best mark of 7-03.75 ranks sixth nationally.
Through the first five weeks of the outdoor season, the Cards have 52 BIG EAST Championship qualifiers (33 men, 19 women) and a school record 12 NCAA Mideast Regional qualifiers (eight men, four women). The 2006 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships are set for May 5-7 in Storrs, Conn., while Knoxville, Tenn., is the location for the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 26-27. Following this weekend's home meet, the Cards will have athletes competing on April 27-29 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
