LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following the most impressive showing of the indoor season at last week's Indiana Open, the University of Louisville men's and women's track and field team will return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame at the Loftus Sports Center in South Bend, Ind.
U of L enters the Meyo Invite, which is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET on Friday and continue at 10 a.m. Saturday, after winning 12 event titles and setting four school records last weekend in Bloomington, Ind. Leading the way for the Cards was freshman Tony Belt with an NCAA qualifying and school record mark of 7 feet, 1.5 inches in the high jump. Louisville also had record setting performances in the women's 600m ( Heather Trimiew, 1:34.24), men's 200m (Bryan Webb, 22.39) and men's 3,000m (Wesley Korir, 8:07.45).
For this weekend's meet at UND, the Cardinal men will have a full compliment of athletes for the first time this season with the addition of junior distance runners Chris Danks and Curtis Persinger and sophomore multi specialist Robbie Moore.
"It'll be good for us to have a couple of meets with a full roster of athletes on the men's side before the BIG EAST Championships," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "We're hoping that Curtis and Chris can earn BIG EAST qualifying marks in the mile and continue to build on their improved fitness."
The Meyo Invitational will also serve as an opportunity for the rest of the Cardinal athletes as they work and prepare for the fast approaching conference meet and NCAA Championships.
"The trip to Notre Dame will provide all of our athletes with a last-minute opportunity to earn BIG EAST qualifying marks and to earn and improve upon national level marks," Mann said. "Andre Black (long jump) and Tony Belt (high jump, long jump) will get another shot at improving their national qualifying marks, while Wesley Korir will attempt to earn an NCAA mark in the 5,000-meter run for the first time this season. We're also hoping that Kelley Bowman (high jump) and Emily Turland (weight throw) can have strong performances and earn NCAA qualifying marks."
Following the trip to Notre Dame, U of L will compete at the Tyson Foods Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas on Feb. 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark., in the Cards' final event before the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Feb. 18-19 in Akron, Ohio.
"This is the last week for lifting in the weight room and the more demanding training for our indoor athletes," Mann said. "We'll begin tapering from this point forward in preparation for the conference indoor meet and we look forward to the challenge that will come with that event."
