
No. 14 California Tops Field Hockey 5-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville scored three goals in the second half, but it wasn't enough as No. 14 California defeated the host 13th ranked Cardinals 5-3 Monday afternoon at Trager Stadium. U of L drops to 6-5 on the season, while Cal improves to 9-3.
The Golden Bears dominated the first half, outshooting the Cards 9-3 and building a 4-0 lead. Cal's Valentina Godfrid notched the first of her two goals on a penalty corner with assists from Rachel Moffitt and Andrea Lo at the 16:48 mark.
The Bears went on to score three more goals in the final five minutes of the first half. Godfrid rifled in a shot from the top of the circle at the 30:14 mark to make it a 2-0 game. A minute later Katie Cummings connected on a rebound from Christina McGrath's shot to increase the lead to 3-0.
Cal's Caroline Bistue send a feed to Gwen Belomy who pushed the ball past Louisville goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller at the 33:53 mark in the game to give the Bears a 4-0 lead going into the break.
California drew three penalty corners in the first four minutes of the second half and capitalized on the third as Jamie Nance delivered on an assist from Ashley Glosz to give the Bears a 5-0 lead at the 40:28 mark of the game.
The Cardinals responded two minutes later when they capitalized on their second penalty corner of the half. Junior forward Janelle Avila sent a pass to senior midfielder Jen Kastelic who was posted up on the left side of the cage to send the ball past California goalkeeper Veronica Sykes to put Louisville on the board at the 43:56 mark.
U of L took advantage of another penalty corner when Kastelic added her second goal of the game when she connected on a rebound from senior midfielder Jessica Javelet's shot to make the score 5-2 at the 50:24 mark.
Two minutes later, Javelet drilled a shot from the top of the circle into the backboard to pull the Cards within two goals at the 52:02 mark in the game. In the final 15 minutes of the game Louisville applied pressure offensively, outshooting Cal 10-3 with Cal's Sykes picking up five saves during the timeframe. The Cards had what would have been their fourth goal of the game called back because of a foul with less than three minutes left in the game.
Louisville outshot Cal 16-8 in the second half and finished the game with a 19-17 shot advantage. California held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners in the game.
Heller (6-5) had three saves in 35:00 of action while freshman Heather Bustanoby registered four stops in the second half. Sykes (9-3) picked up the win in the cage for the Golden Bears recording 10 saves in the game.
The Cardinals will continue their homestand when they play host to No. 12 Indiana Friday at Trager Stadium at 7 p.m.
