LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior midfielder Jessica Javelet scored two goals and added an assist as the 12th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team handed No. 15 Villanova its first BIG EAST Conference loss Saturday afternoon at Trager Stadium. U of L improves to 9-6 (3-1 BIG EAST) while Villanova drops to 11-5 (3-1). Javelet's assist gives her sole possession of Louisville all-time assist record (36). She now owns every offensive single season and career school record.
"I'm proud of the way our team played today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We played hard and showed a lot of intensity which indicates the respect we have for our conference opponents. Villanova is a very dangerous team and this game was much closer than the final score shows."
The Cardinals began their attack from the starting whistle, delivering three shots and drawing two penalty corners in the first four minutes. The Wildcats, however, got on the scoreboard first when Stephanie Campbell connected on Villanova's second corner of the game with assists from Lauren Campanelli and Sam Coveleski at the 8:18 mark.
Louisville answered seven minutes later when Javelet drilled a penalty corner shot to tie the game at 1-1. Senior Jen Kastelic and junior Casey Meizinger assisted on the goal.
The Cards went ahead 2-1 when Kastelic gained possession of the ball, positioned herself in the middle of the circle and sent the ball past VU goalkeeper Alex Whalen at the 25:15 mark.
U of L took the 2-1 lead into break after outshooting Villanova 7-4 and holding a 4-2 edge in penalty corners in the first half.
The Wildcats opened the second half with another penalty corner goal just over a minute into the half. This time Megan Foster rifled a shot past Louisville goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller to tie the game at 2-2.
The teams engaged in a midfield battle with the teams trading shots and penalty corners for the next 14 minutes. Louisville junior forward Janelle Avila gave the Cards a 3-2 lead when she dribbled from just outside the 25 yardline and delivered an unassisted goal at the 50:48 mark.
The Cards added to their lead six minutes later when Javelet's pass from the right side of the cage found junior forward Allison Maffitt who pushed the ball in to make it a 4-2 game.
Villanova continued to apply offensive pressure in the next four minutes, firing off four shots on goal and earning three penalty corners, but Heller stopped all four shots until the Cards could regain their offensive momentum.
Javelet notched her second goal of the contest with a feed from junior forward Missy Briery at the 65:10 mark.
The Wildcats had a final chance to score, drawing two corners in the closing seconds of the game. As time ran out, Foster delivered one final shot, but Heller posted a save to preserve the 5-2 win.
Louisville outshot Villanova 13-11 in the second half and finished the game with a 20-15 shot advantage. Villanova had eight second half penalty corners to Louisville's four and held a 10-8 edge in the game. Louisville's Heller registered 10 saves in the game. Villanova's Whalen posted seven saves in 53:29 minutes of play and Erin Scott had three stops in the final 16:31.
The Cards will play host to Northeastern (7-8) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
