LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's and women's track and field head coach Ron Mann has released the Cardinals 2006 schedule and it includes a pair of home meets at Cardinal Park. U of L will host the Cardinal Invitational on April 22 and the Ohio River Challenge on May 13.
U of L will open the indoor season on Dec. 9 at the Fast Start Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., while the outdoor season will open for the Cards on March 17-18 at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.
"This is a very good schedule and it will allow us to compete at the highest collegiate level," said Mann, entering his second season at U of L. "We believe that the best way for our program to reach the level we're striving for is to allow our student-athletes to compete in the nation's most elite events. With a pair of excellent home meets at Cardinal Park, this schedule should provide a great test and a great opportunity for our program to continue to move forward."
Following the indoor opener at SIU, U of L will compete at the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 13-14, the Illinois Invitational on Jan. 21, the Rod McCravy Memorial hosted by the University of Kentucky on Jan. 27-28, the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Feb. 3-4, the Tyson Foods Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas on Feb. 10-11 and the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Feb. 18-19 at a site to be determined. The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark.
After the outdoor opener at Arizona State, the Cards will compete at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State on March 24-25, the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati on April 1, the Texas Relays on April 6-8 and the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee on April 12-15. Along with the Cards' home meet on April 22, U of L will also have athletes competing at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on April 21-22 while on April 27-29, U of L will send athletes to both the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The BIG EAST Outdoor Championships are set for May 5-7, while the NCAA Mideast Regionals will be on May 26-27 in Knoxville, Tenn., followed by the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif.
"One of the most important goals for us is to build the U of L track and program so that it is among the nation's elite and this schedule will give us several opportunities to work towards that goal this season," Mann said.
