SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - Marquette University edged the University of Louisville by a single stroke on the third hole of a playoff to capture the team title in the 4th annual Cardinal Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon.
Austin Peay's Chris Barron fired a final round 67, and finished the tournament at -11 to capture medalist honors by four strokes over Illinois State's Matt Miller(74-66-69-209).
"It was an exciting finish to the tournament," said U of L Head Coach Mark Crabtree.
"Any time you can put yourself in a pressure situation like that, you learn what your team is all about. I'm proud of the effort we put into it, and we made some nice birdies down the stretch to force the playoff."
"We have played two tournaments this season and we have finished first and tied for first."
The Golden Eagles rode a final round 68 from Mike Van Sickle in trimming the two-shot lead the Cards held over Marquette after two rounds of play.
The two teams finished regulation play even with a seven-under 857 through 54 holes.
They adjourned to the 18th hole and played the even the first two times, before Marquette picked up a single stroke on the Cards the third time through to clinch the tiebreaker.
Louisville's top individual was Derek Fathauer (73-67-70-210), who was -6 for the tournament, placing him in a tie for third.
Adam Hadwin (70-71-71-212) played as an individual for the Cards and shot four-under to tie for seventh.
U of L's Adam Rainaud (71-70-74-215) was -1 for the tournament, placing in a tie for 13th, while Will Hanna (70-74-72-216) shot even par, pacing 18th. Daryl Fathauer (72-72-73-217) was 19th at one over and Brent Holmes (72-78-76-226) tied for 50th at plus 10.
Stuart Ashwood (70-79-74-223) also played as an individual for the Cardinal and carded a seven-over 223, tying him for 40th in the tournament.
Seventeen players finished the tournament under par, while U of L and Marquette were joined by third place finisher Washington State(-3) and fourth place Austin Peay (-2) in the red.
The Cards will next travel to Malibu, California to compete in the two-day Clubglove Intercollegiate beginning Monday, October 3.
