SIMPSONVILLE, Ky - The 25th-ranked University of Louisville men's golf team leads the 4th annual Cardinal Intercollegiate by two strokes over Marquette after two rounds of play, after carding a 568 at the Cardinal Club Monday.
The Cardinals posted a first round 285 which was three shots off the pace, before Derek Fathauer shot a second-round 67 and Adam Rainaud put together a 70, putting the Cards in the driver's seat for the final round on Tuesday.
"I am certainly pleased with our performance today," said U of L Head Coach Mark Crabtree.
"The play of Derek and Adam this afternoon was key for us."
In the team standings, seven teams are within 10 shots of the lead, with Washington State (572) four shots off the pace, followed by Wyoming and Austin Peay (576), Illinois State (577) and Eastern Kentucky (578), making for a dogfight in the final round Tuesday.
"We are looking forward to an exciting final round tomorrow and I expect our guys to go out and play well. We'll see if we can't get a solid contribution from everyone," added Crabtree.
The race for medalist honors is equally tight, with 21 golfers within five shots of Towson's Jeff Castle and Austin Peay's Chris Barron, who both shot 69-69-138 to share the lead after day one.
Fathauer (73-67-140) is part of a six-way tie for fourth to lead the U of L team.
Rainaud (71-70-141) is part of a five-way tie for 10th, which includes fellow Cardinal Adam Hadwin (70-71-141), who is competing as an individual.
Will Hanna (70-74-144) and Daryl Fathauer (72-72-144) are six shots off the lead in a tie for 22nd, while Brent Holmes (72-78-150) sits in a tie for 46th, 12 strokes off the pace.
Louisville's Stuart Ashwood (70-79-149) is currently in a tie for 37th, also competing as one of five individuals.
Illinois State's Matt Maskel tied the Cardinal Club course record with a first-round 65, placing him in the lead by three strokes after a round of play. Maskel was followed by Andrew An of Mercer, who was three shots off the lead, and seven golfers were four off the pace with a first round 69.
With all four golfers in the top 20, Marquette carded a six-under 282 to take the lead after the first 18 holes on Monday, paced by Nathan Colson's 69, tying him for third after one round.
Washington State was just two shots off the pace after a round of golf, followed by the Cards(285), Eastern Kentucky(286) and Illinois State(287).
The 75 golfers that comprise the 15-team field will tee of at 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday for the final round.
