LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Junior Jessica Javelet scored three goals and had one assist as the No. 13 ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Saint Louis 6-1 Friday at Trager Stadium.
"Saint Louis is a very disciplined and feisty team, but I was pleased that we were able to find ways to score - especially against a hard working team like SLU," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Today's win was the result of a team effort and it was good to see us play with intensity for the full 70 minutes."
The teams played through 10 scoreless minutes before the Cardinals got on the board when Javelet deflected junior Lisa Wasser's penalty corner shot at the 10:36 mark.
The Billikens answered four minutes later when Ashlea Hibshman set up on the left side of the cage and connected on Mary Henry's pass to tie the game at 1-1.
The Cards pulled ahead 2-1 at the 24:10 mark when Javelet dribbled from the right side of the circle and rifled a shot past SLU goalkeeper Amy Wasserman.
Louisville added another goal two minutes later when sophomore Casey Diener sent a pass to freshman Lauren Schaefer, who was all alone in the circle. Schaefer got past Wasserman and scored to give Louisville a 3-1 halftime lead. U of L outshot Saint Louis 12-1 in the first half and held a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners.
In the second half, the Cards' offense continued when redshirt freshman Laken Letellier's cross from the right corner of the cage found junior Carrie Jackson to give Louisville a 4-1 lead at the 52:45 mark. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Janelle Avila connected on a feed from Javelet to increase the lead to 5-1. Javelet added an unassisted goal at the 64:26 mark for the 6-1 final.
The Cardinals outshot the Billikens 21-2 in the game and held an 8-2 . Javelet, who leads the nation in scoring with 15 goals, notched her second hat trick of the season. Louisville sophomore goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller (8-2) picked up the win. Wasserman (3-5) registered nine saves in the loss. SLU falls to 3-5 on the season and will face Syracuse (3-4) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
