LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team is ranked No. 14 in the first STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Coaches Poll released Sept. 13.
"We are very excited to be recognized by the nation's coaches in the season's first poll," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "The team has been working hard to start the season strong and will continue to work harder to improve and earn our ranking."
After starting the 2005 season with a 7-0 loss to 2004 NCAA runner-up Duke, the Cardinals have gone on a five game winning streak, defeating each of their opponents by at least three goals. The 5-1 start is the best since 2001, when U of L began the season with an 8-1 record.
The Cardinals are led in scoring by junior Jessica Javelet who also leads the nation in points with 29, goals with 11 and is tied for first with seven assists. Louisville will travel to No. 17 Ohio State Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m.
The last time the Cardinals appeared in the top 20 was October 7, 2003, when they were ranked No. 20. Since that time, Louisville has won two Mid-American Conference championships and made two NCAA appearances while receiving votes in the poll.
