Providence, R.I. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team was picked to finish second in its inaugural BIG EAST Conference season while junior Jessica Javelet and senior Rachel Overton were selected to the preseason all-conference team. Defending conference champion Connecticut was tabbed as the preseason favorite as voted on by the league head coaches.
"We are honored to be chosen to finish second in this year's Big East race," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "In our first year as a Big East member, we recognize the great challenges that lie ahead for our team. The league boasts exceptional field hockey programs, we are fortunate to be ranked among them."
The U of L field hockey team finished the 2004 season as the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament champions and earned its second consecutive NCAA postseason bid.
Javelet, a junior midfielder from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., was a third team STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America selection and earned All-MAC first team honors after leading the team and the conference with 15 goals and 41 points.
Overton, a senior defender from Newbury Park, Calif., is a two-year starter and 2004 second team All-MAC selection.
The Cardinals will open the 2005 season against 2004 national runner-up Duke on Saturday, August 27 at 2 p.m.
