
Field Hockey Season Opens Saturday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team opens up the 2005 season on Saturday, August 27 at Trager Stadium with the Women 4 Women Champions Tournament featuring Boston, Duke, and Michigan State. Boston and Michigan State will play at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and U of L faces 2004 NCAA runner-up Duke at 2 p.m. The consolation game will be Sunday at 11:30 a.m., with the championship game starting at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
Duke finished the 2004 season with a 15-4 record and was ranked fourth in the final 2004 National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. Michigan State, ninth in the final NFHCA rankings, was also a 2004 NCAA semi-finalist and closed out the season with a 16-3 overall record. Boston, the preseason favorite to win the America East Conference, finished the 2004 season with a 13-7 record and was ranked No. 19 in the final coaches poll.
U of L finished the 2004 season with a 12-10 overall record and posted a program-best 8-2 Mid-American Conference record while tying Kent State for the regular season championship and received the league's automatic NCAA play-in game bid.
The Cardinals return 19 letterwinners and nine starters from last year's Mid-America Conference championship team including third team All-American junior midfielder Jessica Javelet and fellow All-Mac selections sophomore goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller, senior defender Rachel Overton and junior midfielder Lisa Wasser.
