
Field Hockey Rolls in 2005 Alumnae Game

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated the alumnae team 9-1 on a scorching Saturday at Trager Stadium.
Twenty six former Cardinals returned to play the 2005 squad in the preseason tuneup. The alums jumped to a 1-0 lead when Joanie (Frame) Bockweg connected on a rebound off of Louisville goalkeeper sophomore Marie-Claire Heller with 29:28 remaining in the first half. The Cardinals quickly tied the game when junior Jen Kastelic scored two minutes later. Sophomore Janelle Avila gave U of L a 2-1 lead at the 21:13 mark in the first half. Junior Jessica Javelet delivered two more goals within three minutes to make it a 4-1 game. With the alumnae goalkeeper out of the game, the Cards rattled off three more goals in the remaining 10 minutes of the first half. Sophomore Missy Briery scored with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, followed by freshman Lauren Schaefer's scoring debut at the 7:02 mark. Briery capped the first half scoring with another goal at the 6:04 mark to make it 7-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the alumnae - playing with a goalkeeper held the Cardinals until the 10:38 mark when Carrie Jackson delivered a goal to make it 8-1. Avila followed two minutes later with her second goal of the game for a 9-1 final tally.
The alumnae had two opportunities to score in the second half when Olivia Netzler sent a shot past Heller, but junior Andrea Roussel was there to pick up a defensive save. Desire' Miller also lifted a penalty corner shot in, but Heller stopped the threat.
"The 2005 alumnae game marks the best and most competitive turnout we've ever had," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We are grateful to have the opportunity play this game, because it helps us prepare for our opener with Duke. The alums played with the passion that they are known for - their dedication to Team Cardinal is great. We hope to keep building on the alumnae game tradition."
Louisville will open the 2005 season by playing host to Duke, Michigan State and Boston University in the Champions Tournament Aug. 27-28 at Trager Stadium. The Cards will play 2004 NCAA runner-up Duke, Saturday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m.
