BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - University of Louisville junior Jennifer Hartig finished 12th in the pole vault during the first day of competition Friday at the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University. The schedule of events for the opening day was not completed due to heavy rain and lightning forcing the long jump competition, which will include U of L senior Ify Akubeze, to be concluded Saturday afternoon.
Hartig, a native of Alexandria, Ky., set a new personal best with a mark of 12 feet, 6 inches in her first-ever NCAA regional appearance. Hartig entered the event following a first-place finish in the pole vault at the 2005 Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 13 in Houston, Texas. Sarah Landau of Miami University won the pole vault at the NCAA Mideast Regional with a mark of 13-07.75.
Akubeze, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, will compete in Saturday's long jump competition which is set to begin at 1 p.m. EDT on the IU campus. Several events from Friday's schedule including both the men's and women's long jump, the men's and women's 5,000-meters and the men's 200-meter dash were postponed until Saturday.
